See what the travel insurance covers

COVID-19

Updated 18.8.2022 at 11:00

Not sure what your travel insurance covers? These are the most frequently asked questions by our customers right now

Your travel insurance is still valid in most countries around the world, but even though the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lifted its global travel advisory, the pandemic is far from over. This has made many of our customers concerned.

Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions by customers right now (you can find even more information about the pandemic and travel insurance further down the page).

Don't have travel insurance?

Remember to buy travel insurance before you book your trip to make sure you have valid cancellation insurance.

I don’t want to use my tickets because of the infection situation What does the travel insurance cover?

We do not cover cancellations due to fear of quarantine, illness or other similar factors. In any case, you can contact the airline, hotel or travel organiser to see if your tickets or order can be rebooked. Because of the pandemic, many people now have more flexible rebooking options than in the past.

COVID-19 has infected me or someone I will be travelling with prior to the trip. What do I do if I have to cancel the trip?

We treat COVID-19 as a normal illness if you or someone you're travelling with gets it. This means that if you cancel your trip and seek compensation from us, you must provide us with documentation that you are ill.

Unfortunately, a positive home test is not sufficient documentation in this case. You must take a PCR test at a municipal testing station or a private medical centre, or obtain a doctor's certificate stating that you are ill.

The concert/event I am going to has been cancelled. Can I get something reimbursed on the travel insurance?

Unfortunately, we cannot assist you here; you must contact the event's organisers to request a refund. Neither does travel insurance cover any money you may have paid for flights, hotels and other expenses if the event (concert, theatre, football matches and so on) you were planning to attend is cancelled.

The country I was going to travel to has closed the borders/introduced a lockdown Will I be covered for cancellation?

Airlines usually cancel flights to countries that close their borders. In that case, you must seek reimbursement from the airline on your own, as cancellations are not covered by travel insurance. If you cancel the trip yourself due to a lockdown or something similar, the insurance will not cover you.

Someone at home is quarantined, and I want to cancel a domestic trip. What does the travel insurance cover?

We cover flight and hotel cancellations in Norway if you are placed in a so-called government-mandated quarantine due to COVID-19, such as by municipal/local health authorities. The cover applies to domestic trips from 1 May 2021 and indefinitely thereafter.

What happens if I or someone in the household is quarantined or isolated abroad?

If you get COVID-19 while travelling, you must either take a PCR test or be tested by a doctor or nurse where you are staying. When we process your case, we will need this confirmation that you are or have been ill. If you become ill, your insurance will cover the additional costs of accommodation, a new return journey and lost holiday time. Expenses for food are not covered.

If you are placed in an authority-imposed quarantine while travelling due to close contact, the insurance covers additional expenses for accommodation and a new return journey. Lost holiday and expenses for food are not covered.

I/someone in the household had to pay for a COVID-19 test abroad. Do you cover the costs of the test?

If you or another member of your household is required to take a COVID-19 test abroad and the result is positive, we will reimburse your expenses. COVID-19 is treated like any other unexpected illness that can occur while travelling. If the test is negative, you must pay for it yourself.

Useful advice and tips before you travel

Check local restrictions

Because of the pandemic, some countries still have entry restrictions. Remember that COVID-19 infection may cause the capacity of local hospitals to be exceeded.

The travel insurance still covers regular cancellations

Remember also that the travel insurance naturally still covers more regular cancellations due, for example, to acute illness or death in the immediate family.

Travel insurance in Norway also covers theft, acute illness, accidents, death in the immediate family and fire/damage to the residence. You will find the full coverage in your insurance certificate.

Download the Reiseklar (“Ready to travel”) app

Why not download the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ new Reiseklar (“Ready to travel”) app? It will give you useful information both before and during the trip.

Cancelled trip? This is how you can expedite the processing of your case at Fremtind.

Check flights, hotels, travel agencies and organisers

  • You must always first cancel your trip with the airline, tour operator, hotel or similar.

Unfortunately, we will be unable to process your case until we know what you will receive from the airline, tour operator, hotel or similar.

Check what you receive from those you have ordered from

  • Get written confirmation from the company who sold you the trip, showing how much money you are getting back.

Are you not getting your money back from the company you ordered from?

  • If you’re not getting your money back, you must provide us with written confirmation from the airline, hotel, etc. of this as well. You will receive the confirmation from the company that sold you the trip.

Report a claim and attach documents

  • You can now report your claim.

  • Attach the documentation we need to process your claim:

    • Tickets/receipts for the air travel, hotel and similar.
    • Written confirmation of what you receive from the airline, hotel or similar
    • Did you pay for the trip with your credit card? Send us a statement of the payment, or invoice that shows what you have paid.
    • Inform us if anyone else in your home has travel insurance anywhere else e.g. from their employer or through a union.

Travel to countries subject to travel advice

What does the travel insurance cover when a country is subject to travel advice?

We cover cancellations if the country issues travel advice on the day you were scheduled to travel. This only applies if you booked your trip after 1 October 2021 and the country had no travel advice at the time.

Is the travel insurance valid if I have been vaccinated against COVID-19 and am travelling between countries?

I’ve been vaccinated against COVID-19. Does this mean that I can now travel between the countries and that my travel insurance will still be valid?

The infection situation in each country or region determines whether you can travel there. In other words, you must still follow the authorities' travel restrictions and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' travel advice. This advice will also determine whether or not your travel insurance is valid.

I am in a country with travel advice, but I booked the ticket when there was no travel advice.

I've travelled to a country with travel advice but purchased my ticket when the country didn't. What does the travel insurance cover then?

If you travel to a country with travel advice, even if it did not have when you booked your trip, your travel insurance will be invalid. This means that you will not receive compensation if something happens on the trip.

The only exception is if you go on a necessary trip, in which case your travel insurance will apply as usual. More on what Fremtind considers "necessary travel" can be found further down the page.

Is travel insurance valid if you visit a country that has travel advice?

We understand very well that our customers sometimes have to travel. If the trip is necessary, the travel insurance covers trips to so-called red countries, or countries with travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This is the kind of travel we consider necessary:

  • Damage to houses, buildings or apartments that you have abroad: You can also travel for necessary maintenance, i.e. maintenance that must be carried out to avoid damage to the home.
  • Death, funeral, or acute, serious illness in the immediate family: For a definition of immediate family, see the terms and conditions of your insurance policy.
  • Medical and life-saving treatment: This does not apply to so-called maintenance treatment, follow-up appointments, routine check-ups, importing medicine to Norway or similar.
  • Collection journeys when adopting.
  • Legal proceedings where you need to attend in person.
  • Renewal of passport/visa where you need to attend in person.
  • Students in a foreign country: Applies at college and university level.
  • Visiting between parents and children: Applies for established visitation rights.
  • Business travel: Applies to employers who provide business travel insurance to their employees and when the employer believes the trip is absolutely necessary.

Important! If you are on a necessary trip, you must be able to document the reason you left. You do not need to do this before travelling, but we will require it if you report a claim to us later.

For example, the documentation may be an appraisal report if the property is damaged, confirmation from the adoption office, a certificate if there is serious illness or death or similar.

In any case, we encourage everyone to carefully read the authorities' travel advice and to avoid holiday and leisure trips to countries or areas with travel advice or travel restrictions. Other countries' authorities may have their own rules for what constitutes a necessary journey, so it is very important that you as a traveller familiarise yourself with the rules of the country you are visiting.

Where can I find travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs?

From 1 October, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued additional travel advice. The overview of these countries can be found on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website.

I’ve been advised to evacuate by the local authorities where I am, but not by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

I’ve been advised to evacuate by the local authorities in the country where I am, but not by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. What do you cover?

We only cover evacuation when the order comes from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If local authorities order you to evacuate, you will be responsible for any additional costs.

I'm in a country with travel advice, and I booked the trip when it had been issued

I've travelled to a country with travel advice, and I booked the trip when the country was under travel advice. What does my travel insurance cover?

In that case, your travel insurance will not be valid. See also the point above: “I've travelled to a country with travel advice but purchased my ticket when the country didn't. What does the travel insurance cover then?”

Here are answers to the most important questions for your future travels.

Travel cancellation

What do I do if I have to cancel my trip?

You cancel the trip by contacting the airline, hotel or other travel operators. When you cancel your trip, you are only entitled to a portion of the money you paid.

Report your case to us once you know how much you will be reimbursed by the airline, hotel or other entity. You can report your claim online. Follow the instructions on the website where you purchased your travel insurance.

The airline or tour operator goes bankrupt

What happens if the airline or tour operator from which I purchased a ticket declares bankruptcy?

If you paid for your trip with a credit card, you can request a refund from the credit card company or the company who issued you the credit card. Bankruptcies or cancellations are not covered by travel insurance, whether during a crisis or when things are normal.

If you cannot go on a package holiday because the people behind the trip go bankrupt, you must contact the travel guarantee fund. They will refund the cost of your trip as long as the people organising the trip are members of this fund. The Norwegian Travel Guarantee Fund only covers package tours/charter tours, not regular flights or hotel stays.

Symptoms of COVID-19

We understand that such a situation can cause anxiety and stress, and we applaud you for taking the test.

Your travel insurance is still treated the same as any other insurance, which means we require documentation from you in order to process your case. If you cancel your trip now because you became acutely ill, we must have written proof that you were sick with COVID-19 at the time you cancelled.

If the COVID-19 test is positive, you must provide documentation when reporting your case to us. NOTE! Travel must be booked prior to 12 March 2020, or while the destination was highlighted in yellow (see top of this page for more information on red and yellow countries).

If the COVID-19 test is negative, you will not be covered by the travel insurance, as you were not ill at the time the trip was cancelled.

The trip has been cancelled or suspended

What do I do if the trip is cancelled or suspended?

You are entitled to get back all the money you paid for the trip. Contact the airline, hotel or similar entity yourself to arrange a refund.

Trips cancelled or suspended by the airline are not covered by travel insurance.

The airline may also choose to rebook your flight, but you will be able to select the new departure time.

How long can I wait to report my claim?

You have one year (from the date you cancelled) to report your case to Fremtind.

Other questions

Does it matter how I pay for the trip?

For example, is it wise to pay with a credit card?

If you have paid for your trip with a credit card, you have additional insurance. In any case, having year-round travel insurance is always a good idea.

Does travel insurance cover lost earnings?

No, we do not cover lost wages or other income.

What happens if I become ill on the trip?

Call our emergency helpline on +47 22 96 50 45. Check to see if your hotel or the place where you are staying has any local advice that you should consider.

Should I register on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' website?

Should I register on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' website if I am traveling abroad?

Yes, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we encourage all Norwegians who are traveling abroad to register their trip at reiseregistrering.no. This allows you to easily receive useful information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It's also a good idea to stay up to date on travel information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, whether you're already travelling abroad or planning to go.

Insurance provided by my employer and/or a trade union or similar organisation.

I have insurance with you through my job and/or the Norwegian Union of Municipal and General Employees etc. Is this travel insurance more comprehensive than private travel insurance?

No, there are exactly the same terms and conditions in your agreement as in a normal agreement.

Will I be covered for holiday days I lose due to the COVID-19?

No, this is not covered by the travel insurance.

The travel insurance in the credit card and regular travel insurance

Is there a distinction between the travel insurance provided by my credit card and standard travel insurance?

The two are similar in many ways, but there are some differences, such as how many people are covered by the insurance. If you are unsure about the coverage, check with the bank or those who issued you the credit card, or check the terms of your travel insurance where you purchased/got the insurance.
