Questions and answers

I’m ill and travelling. What should I do?

If you or your fellow travellers need emergency help, contact SOS International on +47 22 96 50 45. They will help you find a doctor and a hospital, and take care of practical matters.

For minor injuries or illnesses, you can seek medical attention if you need it. Take your travel insurance card, passport or other ID with you.

If you have expenses as a result of illness, ensure you keep the doctor’s certificate and all the receipts. These need to be sent in with your claims form when you use your insurance.

Travel insurance in addition to Health Insurance Card?

The European Health Insurance Card only gives you the right to necessary medical treatment in the EEA and Switzerland. It doesn’t cover medical treatment in other parts of the world. Neither does the European Health Insurance Card cover costs related to medical repatriation or sending for family/next of kin in the event of serious illness.

Cancellation, delay, material damage and theft of luggage are other important components that are covered by the travel insurance.

What should I do if I get in an accident abroad?

When you drive your own car abroad, your car insurance applies if you have an accident with the car.

If you rent a car abroad, the rental company’s insurance applies. Remember to check this carefully when you sign the rental agreement. The travel insurance can cover the excess you have on the rental car if something should happen.

In the event of theft and burglary of your own car, it’s important that you report this to us. If you have a rental car, you can call the number in the rental contract. If there is damage to the rental car, the insurance that comes with the car applies, but the excess is covered by your travel insurance. The same applies to private belongings. Remember to report the incident, take note of any witnesses and document what has happened, where it happened and what has been stolen.

Are my children insured under my travel insurance?

If you choose family cover when you buy the travel insurance, your whole family will be covered under the same insurance. This applies even when you’re not travelling together.

With family cover, both children and spouses/cohabitants are included in the travel insurance. Children and young people are covered by the parents’ insurance up to the age of 21, as long as they have the same address in the National Population Register.

When the children move out, it’s worth considering Household contents and travel insurance for young people.

What should I do if my luggage is delayed?

If your luggage is delayed by more than 4 hours on your outward journey, you will receive a settlement payment. You can report the claim straight away or when you get home.

What you need to do if your luggage is delayed:

Report it to the airport

  • Get confirmation that your luggage has been delayed – this is called a PIR report.
  • Also keep hold of the luggage tag that you got at check in.

Buy what you need

  • You can buy clothes and toiletries if your luggage is delayed by more than four hours on your outward journey.
  • You can spend up to NOK 5000 per person.
  • Remember to keep hold of your receipts.

Contact the insurance company

  • Report the claim for a settlement payment. You can also call us if you need practical and immediate help.
Does travel insurance apply for those aged over 75?

The travel insurance doesn’t have any age limit – it applies to everyone, regardless of age.

There are still age restrictions to the accident cover which are worth knowing about: at the age of 70, the settlement payment is reduced, and when you turn 75, the cover expires.

See terms and conditions for detailed coverage overview.

What should I do if I lose my passport when travelling?

If you lose your passport or have it stolen while you are travelling abroad, it’s important that you report this as soon as possible.

Start by reporting it to the local police. Remember to get a copy of the report or a receipt from the police. When your passport is reported lost or stolen, it’s not longer a valid travel document.

You must then contact the nearest Norwegian embassy or consulate to apply for a temporary travel document so you can travel back to Norway. The travel document is a kind of emergency passport and is also called a “laissez-passer”.

Find your nearest embassy

Does travel insurance cover bicycles?

Theft and vandalism of bicycles are covered by the travel insurance, except in the municipality of residence, educational institution, or workplace.

Otherwise, as a rule contents insurance covers the bicycle. You can also buy your own bicycle insurance.

What happens if I lose my luggage?

The travel insurance covers losses of luggage up to an unlimited overall sum. Remember, however, that individual items are subject their own limits.

To receive compensation for your luggage, the reason for the loss or damage may for example be due to

  • loss of or damage to check-in luggage
  • theft
  • robbery
  • traffic accident
  • fire
  • natural damage

See additional limits and causes covered in the terms and conditions.

At the hospital without travel insurance. What happens?

If you end up in hospital abroad without travel insurance, it can be expensive. Hospital bills of several hundred thousand kroner are not uncommon. Should you also need repatriation via an ambulance flight from abroad, the expenses can be extremely high.

If you end up in hospital in the EEA or Switzerland, you can use your European Health Insurance Card to prove that you have the same right to necessary help as the citizens of that country. You still need to be aware that the card does not cover extra expenses for your return journey, and that in many countries, the government doesn’t cover the full cost of health services.

What if I’m affected by airline strikes?

The travel insurance doesn’t cover losses and expenses related to strikes and labour conflicts. We recommend you get in touch with the airline for information, changes to and rebooking of your flight.

See also forbrukerrådet.no to see your air travel rights and what you are entitled to.

How long does the travel insurance apply for?

Our full-year travel insurance applies all year round, but is limited by the number of consecutive holiday days for single trips. The insurance applies for single trips up to 70 days in length, but can be extended to apply to 90, 120 or 180 days.

How will I find my travel insurance certificate and travel card?

You will find both your travel insurance certificate and your travel card by logging in to the online or mobile banking app.

What does cancellation insurance cover?

Cancellation cover is part of the travel insurance, and gives you your money back if you need to cancel a trip due to unforeseen circumstances.

You are covered if the unforeseen events are due to

  • acute illness, worsening of illness, accident or death that affects you, your immediate family, companion or their immediate family, someone in your travel party (up to 6 people) who you have bought the same trip with, or childminder that result in the trip not being able to go ahead as planned.
  • fire, burglary, water or natural damage that requires you to stay home.
  • travelling to the location is in breach of advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Norwegian government for domestic travel.

You will get your money back for the

  • travel and the accommodation.
  • excursions and events.
  • pet hotel for dogs and cats
For how many days can I travel per single trip?

When you buy travel insurance, you can choose how many days’ travel you need insurance for. 70 days is the standard maximum trip length per single trip, but you can choose to change the maximum length per trip to 90, 120 or up to 180 days.

You’ll find information about your insurance’s trip length per trip in the online or mobile banking app.

Does the travel insurance cover broken mobile phones?

The travel insurance doesn’t cover broken mobile phones or other items that are destroyed by accident.

If you would like to insure yourself against accidents you need to have fully comprehensive contents insurance or separate mobile phone insurance.

Is there excess on travel insurance?

As a rule, there is no excess on our travel insurance. However, there are some exceptions. See a summary of the coverages in the terms and conditions.

What should I do if I get delayed on a journey?

When the departure is delayed

If your flight, train, ferry or the means of transport you use is delayed or cancelled, first get in touch with the transport provider. They can often help you there and then, with a rebooking or refund.

Remember to keep hold of all your receipts, expenses, tickets and confirmations of delayed transport.

Then report the claim to us. You can apply to have expenses that are not covered by the transport provider covered by the travel insurance. Should the delay result in an extra overnight stay, this can also be covered by the insurance.

When you arrive too late for the means of transport you have booked

In general, you need to allow plenty of time. If the delay is your fault because you planned your time badly, we cannot cover the costs.

If you miss your transport, first contact the company responsible for getting you to your departure. They may be liable for the costs.

For example, if the delay is due to unforeseen weather conditions, technical problems with the means of transport or a traffic accident with your transport, you can get the necessary costs covered for completing your journey.

Remember that you must document expenses and the delay. Report this to us before booking new tickets.
