What does car insurance cover?

Car insurance covers you financially if your car is damaged or you injure others. The type of damage you cover will be determined by the type of car insurance you choose. You can choose between the mandatory liability insurance, partial coverage, comprehensive coverage, and top comprehensive coverage when you purchase insurance.

When you compare car insurance, you should look at the terms and conditions to find out what the different coverages give you. The easiest overview of terms is available when you calculate the price of car insurance online. We recommend coverage based on what we know about you and your car, and you can adjust what you want covered if you wish.

You can also use a coverage table as a guide for comparison – from the cheapest car insurance to extra protection with top coverage.

Car insurance FAQs

How do I change the mileage on my car insurance?

You can easily make changes to your insurance in the insurance list in the mobile bank - including the distance driven on your car insurance. In addition, you can, among other things, see what you have insured, find terms and coverage, purchase insurance, view your insurance offers, check your information and payments, and make changes or report a claim on your insurance.

What is deductible?

Excess is the amount that, as the policyholder, you must cover after a claim. By selecting a higher excess than normal, you can reduce the price significantly. The higher the excess you choose, the lower the price.

The amount paid by the insurance company is the calculated loss minus your excess.

How can I terminate my car insurance?

Sold, wrecked or stolen vehicles

You don’t need to give us notice that the vehicle insurance will expire, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration will inform us of this. We cannot terminate the insurance before we receive notice from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. Any overpaid insurance premium and road traffic insurance tax will be automatically refunded.

You must still contact us if

  • you have returned a leased vehicle.
  • when changing to a vehicle that doesn’t require liability insurance (for example unregistered vehicles, trailers etc.)
Which damages must be reported to the police?

All events that involve theft, vandalism or personal injury must be reported to the police.

Report circumstances

What should I do if I need roadside assistance?

Roadside assistance is included if you have limited comprehensive insurance, comprehensive or fully comprehensive, throughout the whole of Europe. With fully comprehensive, you also get a courtesy car should you need it in relation to roadside assistance and repairs.

You can call us if you have any minor or major problems on the road. For example, if you have a puncture, if you run out of fuel or power, have engine failure or drive off the road. You do not lose your no-claims bonus as a result of vehicle recovery.

  1. Stay safe
Position your vehicle so it does not create dangerous situations in the traffic. Use hazard lights and wear a hi-vis vest when getting out of the car to place the warning triangle on the road.
  2. Order roadside assistance
Order roadside assistance online or call (+47) 915 04818. It’s open 24 hours a day.
  3. Keep your receipts
Keep your receipts and documentation of any additional expenses you have had related to the car recovery.
  4. What happens next?
Contact Fremtind Forsikring and they will help you with the settlement payment. They can often sort out the situation directly by telephone.
Start by reporting the damage or injury.
How can I get hold of a claims form?

You can get a claims form for vehicles from most car dealers and petrol stations.

The claims form is used to describe the traffic accident, and does not assign blame, but allows the insurance companies to asses the situation and the issue of responsibility.

If you have had an accident or injury you can report it digitally.

Lost your car key?

If your car key has been stolen, you are covered by all of our comprehensive insurance policies. If the key has been lost or broken, you are covered for this under Fully comprehensive. The car insurance then covers up to NOK 15,000 for a new key, programming, and re-coding at an authorized workshop or locksmith.

Do you want to order a Green card for your car holiday.

A green card is an international insurance certificate that confirms that you have valid liability insurance on your car.

Even though you can drive in large parts of Europe without a Green card, it’s still worth carrying one with you. Should you get into a traffic accident while abroad, the Green card can help make the situation a bit easier.

You can order a green card from the insurance list in the mobile bankYou can also call us on 915 04800.

Within the Norwegian Motor Insurers’ Bureau’s website you can see an updated list of countries that require a Green card.

What is a no-claims bonus and how does it work?

A no-claims bonus is a reward for claim-free driving. For each damage-free year, you get a reduction in the price. The higher the no-claims bonus, the lower the insurance price. Maximum bonus is 80%.

Read more about bonus on car insurance.

Can I use my car for practice driving?

Yes, and you don’t need to make changes to your car insurance to practice driving. The companion counts as the driver of the vehicle and is liable.

Did you know, by the way, that you can achieve more benefits in your car insurance by practising?

Do I need my own electric car insurance?

Car insurance also covers electric and hybrid vehicles. You can get coverage for both regular damages and events specific to electric vehicles, depending on the insurance you choose.

If you run out of power, roadside assistance may be included, even in situations where the battery is completely discharged.

Theft of the charging cable may also be covered, as long as the cable is used for charging or is stored in the car when the theft occurs.

I have crashed my car. What should I do?

Notify medical personnel if people have been injured. Fill out the claims form together with the counterparty.

Report it to Fremtind Forsikring online or call 915 04818 (+47 915 04818 from abroad)

What do I do if I fill up with the wrong fuel?

Do not start or drive the car. It will only make the situation worse if the wrong fuel goes from the fuel tank into the fuel system.

Contact us on tel. 915 04818 and we’ll help you by ordering roadside assistance to get your vehicle to an auto repair shop.

You are covered for misfuelling under comprehensive and fully comprehensive insurance.

If you have to move the vehicle away from the petrol station straight away, please ask for help to push the car out of the way.

What do I do in the event of paint or glass damage to the vehicle?

If you have damage to the glass or paint you should get it fixed at the nearest approved auto repair shop. You will find a list of approved auto repair shops here. Contact the auto repair shop directly to book an appointment – they will sort out the practical insurance matters for you.

All our comprehensive insurance policies cover damage to windows.

What is road traffic insurance tax?

Road traffic insurance tax for car replaces the former annual tax. All registered cars with the statutory liability insurance must pay this tax. It has been decided by the authorities that the insurance companies should collect this tax on behalf of the government.

Deregistered vehicle and insurance

When you temporarily deregister your vehicle or another vehicle with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, we are notified of this. If you have partial coverage, comprehensive coverage, or top comprehensive coverage, you will retain coverage on the vehicle in the form of a storage insurance for deregistration. The only difference is that we terminate the liability coverage and the traffic insurance fee.

Because even if the vehicle is not in use, damage can occur. This way, we ensure that your car is covered with storage insurance while you avoid unnecessary costs for a vehicle that is not on the road.

It is not legal to use deregistered vehicles. Before you put your car back on the road, you need to register it again. You will then need to insure it with the minimum legally required liability insurance.

When you want to register your vehicle again, contact us and we’ll upgrade you back to the original insurance policy.
