If you own a home or a cabin, it’s a good idea to have both contents insurance and house or cabin insurance in the same insurance company. Moving? If so, you should review your insurances

Moving is a big life event. You may already have home insurance, but if you’re moving into a larger house with a higher value, you may need more coverage. Maybe you’re moving in with someone and now have double insurance? Did you also know that some personal insurances becomes more relevant when you are a homeowner?

When moving, you should review your insurances. Make an appointment with an adviser and get help with insurance for your specific life situation.

If you own a house or a cabin, it’s a good idea to have both contents insurance and home or cabin insurance in the same insurance company.

If you have the best cover we offer in our home contents insurance, you get moving insurance included. This covers damage to and theft of home contents that occurs during transport and loading/unloading between the home and the vehicle.

If you use a moving company, their insurance applies. Therefore, remember to find out what kind of insurance they have before you sign an agreement.

Insurance for renting and rental

Both landlords and tenants must have their own home contents insurance to cover the value of the belongings in the home where they live.

A tenant is not considered a permanent member of a household and is not covered by the landlord’s home contents insurance. This applies whether you live in a dorm, a shared house or rent an entire home. Therefore, as a tenant, you should have your own insurance to cover your things, just like the homeowner has their insurance.

If you have house insurance with us and rent out parts of your house, remember to let us know. This will ensure that you include rental insurance as additional coverage.

Home insurance FAQs

Insurance when you buy a home

A home buyer’s insurance policy is simply a legal aid insurance policy that ensures access to legal assistance and legal costs in the event of a complaint case against a home seller. An appeal case is related to errors and deficiencies that make claims against the previous owner and the information in the home’s sales prospectus. Perhaps you discover that the bathroom hasn't been professionally refurbished as claimed, find mould in the basement, or notice faults in the electrical system.

Do I need home buyers’ protection insurance?

Home buyers’ protection insurance is not necessarily something you need; you may be partially covered by your contents or house insurance. However, remember to read the terms and conditions carefully: An appeal case can be long and expensive, and the coverage provided by regular home insurances may be insufficient.

The most important thing is that you have good information about the condition of the home and have examined it carefully.

Home buyers’ protection insurance is normally provided by the estate agent when buying a home.

When do I need to make changes to my house or home contents insurance?

Many people make changes to their insurance in connection with a major life event, such as when moving.

In addition to this, you should also evaluate your home insurances if there are major changes to what you own: If, for example, you’re extending your home, you should report it. Or if you buy expensive items or collections of high value, you should let us know so we can take this into account in your home contents insurance policy.

I live in an apartment, do I need house insurance?

If you live in a condominium or housing cooperative, the building is insured through that. You only need your own home contents insurance.

What is the deductible in case of damage?

The deductible is the amount you must pay yourself when you make an insurance claim. The higher the deductible, the cheaper the insurance. Most people save by choosing a higher deductible, as there are usually several years in between each use of the insurance.

Does home contents insurance apply for items I have in the garage?

If you have a detached house, a semi-detached house, or a townhouse, you will be reimbursed for the items you have in the garage.

If you live in an apartment, theft from and vandalism in loft and basement storage rooms are covered to the sum in your terms and conditions. The sum covered may vary from standard to top home contents insurance.

If you have a shared garage, the items you have there will not be replaced.

Insurance when selling a home

When you sell a home, you are responsible for any significant or hidden defects in the home. Even if you’re not to blame, you’re liable for five years after the sale. Home sellers’ protection insurance is liability insurance that protects you from claims for errors and defects you didn’t know about.

Home sellers’ protection insurance is typically arranged by the real estate agent when selling a property, for example DNB Eiendom (DNB Real estate)

What is covered when I buy home sellers’ protection insurance?

When a defect is found after the sale, but which the buyer has no reason to expect, the home is in a worse condition than promised. The insurance covers defects that are significant and that the home seller could not or should not know about.

Do I need home sellers’ protection insurance?

The insurance gives you the peace of mind that you can leave any complaints to professionals. The need for the insurance can vary from housing type to housing type. If you’re selling a new apartment, you may have less need for this type of insurance than if you’re selling an older building.

Do I need a separate home contents insurance for my cabin?

You need to have separate home contents insurance for your cabin, in addition to cabin insurance and the home contents insurance you have at home.

Are solar installations covered by my house or cabin insurance?

Yes, if you have a house or a cabin with a solar cell system, this is covered by the house and cabin insurance.

Solar facilities that are permanently installed on the building and adapted for in-house production of electricity and resale of surplus production will be covered for the same damage as the house or cabin.

Do I need separate insurance for my garage?

You can insure the garage through ancillary benefits in your house insurance. You must report any free-standing additional buildings you have at the property so they can be covered by the insurance you have.

What does it mean that you are available 24/7 for serious incidents?

You will get help 24/7 in the event of a serious incident and if you need immediate help. This applies to houses, cabins and home contents.
