What is home contents insurance?

Home contents insurance covers the value of the belongings in your home. Contents and belongings are the same as items you own and use at home. They are things that can be picked up and moved around, in contrast to the fixtures and fittings that are part of the building.

Examples of contents are clothes, furniture, electronic equipment, sports equipment, bikes, lawnmower and so on. Things stored in the basement, loft and garage also count as contents.

Questions and answers

Does the contents insurance I have at home apply to my cabin as well?

You need to buy separate contents insurance for your cabin. The contents insurance you have for your home is only valid at home. You can buy the contents insurance you’ll find on this page – just enter the address of your cabin to insure it.

It’s worth combining cabin insurance and contents insurance from the same company You only pay one excess and settlement is easier should your cabin be subject to damage.

Are mobile phones, PCs and tablets covered with contents insurance?

Yes, the contents insurance cover both theft and damage to mobile phones, PCs and tablets. To be insured against accidental damage, you must have fully comprehensive contents insurance.

How can I get cheaper contents insurance?

To reduce the price of contents insurance, you can for example:

  • Increase your excess.
  • Combine your insurance with us to get a combination discount.
  • If you are under 34 years old you can get both household contents and travel insurance for the price of one with Insurance Young.
Do children who live away from home need their own contents insurance?

Contents insurance follows the person who owns the insurance, as well as the family and children who are registered at the same address in the national register. For example, if the child lives away from home due to studies or military service, they are still covered if the national register shows them living at home.

What is disability insurance?

Accidents can happen to anyone. With fully comprehensive contents insurance, fortunately you get bad luck insurance included. This covers you if you are unlucky and suffer random and sudden physical damage to your things, for example, if you should lose your mobile phone on the ski slopes.

Read the terms and conditions carefully: Not all damage can be covered, and there may be separate requirements for excess and compensation sums on some of your things. Examples of damage that is not covered include bicycles and sports equipment that are in use, damage caused by pests and things that have been left behind or forgotten.

Does contents insurance cover what I have in the garage?

If you have a detached house, a semi-detached house, or a terraced house, you will be reimbursed for the items you have in the garage. If you live in an apartment, theft from and vandalism in loft and basement storage rooms are covered.

Are bikes and electric bikes covered with contents insurance?

If your bike is stolen from outside your home, from a common room, shed, garage or anywhere else, your contents insurance applies.

Theft and vandalism of bicycles outside of the Nordic countries can be covered by the travel insurance.

If you have an especially expensive bicycle, you can consider taking out separate bicycle insurance.

What are household contents and belongings?

Contents and belongings are the same as items you own and use at home. Items that are permanently installed are counted as part of the building and are not covered by contents insurance.

What is insurance against ID theft?

Insurance against ID theft is included in fully comprehensive contents insurance. It helps you if you have been at risk of ID theft. ID theft means situations where someone else uses your ID in order to commit fraud or other criminal activity.

There are different types of ID that can be misused, such as passports, debit cards, driving licences, signatures and national identity numbers.

If you are the victim of ID theft, you can get advice on how to limit the extent of the damage and recommendations for possible measures to take. In addition, legal assistance is offered, which can be useful in disputes related to payment remarks.

How can I get a discount on contents insurance?

If you group your insurance policies with us, you can get a combination discount on your non-life insurance, such as the contents insurance, for example.

Contents insurance when renting

Both the landlord and tenant must each have their own contents insurance to be covered.

For tenants

A tenant is not considered a permanent member of a household and is not covered by the landlord’s contents insurance. Whether you live in a dormitory, shared house or rent an apartment, you should have insurance that covers your things.

For landlords

Contents insurance covers you and other permanent members of the household in accordance with the terms and conditions. A tenant is not considered to be a permanent member of the household and must therefore have their own insurance.

If you have house insurance at DNB and are renting out parts of your home, you must remember to inform us so you get landlord’s insurance as an add-on. Remember that it’s good idea to have both contents and house insurance with the same company. You only pay one excess and settlement is easier should your home be subject to damage.
