Account types

VPS account and trading account

There is a lot of confusion about the different types of accounts and the abbreviations used in equity trading. In simple terms, everyone who buys and sells securities must have two types of account:

  1. A trading account (for money)
  2. A VPS account (for securities)

When you become a DNB customer, you automatically get a trading account connected to Euronext Securities (previously Verdipapirsentralen) and we will be formally assigned as your account manager. Read more about VPS accounts here.

Share savings account

If you are trading as a retail customer, you may prefer to trade equity-based products with a share savings account. However, you must be aware that you cannot buy unlisted shares (NOTC), shares on Euronext Growth or shares outside the EU with a share savings account. To do this you must use a normal trading account and a VPS account. Read about share savings accounts here.

LEI number (for businesses)

Businesses and professional investors who want to trade securities must have an LEI number. LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) is a type of international organisation number. Find LEI agents and read more here!

VPS Annual Fee - Where can I find my invoice?

With a total balance over NOK 250,000 in your VPS account as of 31.12, an annual fee will be invoiced in March:

ASK customers: The invoice will come in the online bank or by mail as we cannot charge the share savings account.

Customers with a debit account in DNB: The invoice will be automatically charged upon due date, provided there are sufficient funds. A copy of the invoice will be in the mailbox in the online bank.

Customers with a debit account in another bank: The amount will be deducted upon due date, and the invoice will be sent by mail.

Customers without an associated debit account: You will receive the invoice by mail and must enter it for payment yourself.

For questions, call Tel +47 915 04800, say "VPS account" or email ki.markets@dnb.no

All securities you trade are placed in your VPS account and registered with Euronext Securities Oslo (VPS).

What you should know about VPS accounts

A securities account, also known as a VPS account, stores your shares. When you buy shares on the Oslo Stock Exchange, these shares are registered with the Euronext Securities Oslo (VPS).

For example, if you have invested in a startup, this limited company can decide whether they want to be registered in Euronext Securities Oslo or not. If the company is registered there, or plans to be, you must have a VPS account. If you have a VPS account in DNB, we are your account manager. The account is thus provided by Euronext Securities Oslo but managed by us. As a DNB customer you only need to liaise with us.

With a Euronext Securities Oslo-connected account, you can also trade unlisted shares, and shares on approved exchanges outside of the EU. All securities you trade are placed in your VPS account and registered with Euronext Securities Oslo (VPS). If you make a trade, you will receive an amendment notification from Euronext Securities Oslo which shows what your new portfolio looks like. Euronext Securities Oslo also keeps track of dividends etc.

Transfer of shares

How to transfer shares I have in my Share savings account to DNB?

Would you like to transfer your Share savings account (ASK)?

If you have shares held in a VPS account associated with a Share savings account (ASK) with another provider, you can move your entire ASK-account to us.

Click here to transfer your ASK to DNB.

Would you only like to transfer the shares, not the entire ASK?

If you wish to transfer parts of the holdings, for example only the shares, the corresponding proportion of cost price, your deductible risk-free return, and unused deductible, will also be transferred. The Share savings account from which the transfer is made will then not be terminated once the transfer is completed.

You can find the forms for transferring holdings within ASK here

How to transfer shares from a regular VPS account with another provider to DNB?

How to transfer shares from a regular VPS account to DNB?

First, check if your shares are registered on an ASK (share savings Account) or on a regular VPS- account. This answer pertains to shares purchased on a regular VPS account:

It is the bank/brokerage firm where you currently hold the shares that must transfer your shares to DNB.

For example, if you have shares in a VPS-account with Nordea, Nordea is your account manager. You need to contact the account manager where the shares are held to initiate the transfer.

You can use a transfer authorisation form available on our website. The signed authorisation is then sent to the bank/brokerage firm from which you are transferring the shares.

Remember to ask your account manager for the correct postal or email address for submitting the authorisation.

Transfer authorisation forms for both retail and corporate customers can be found here.
