What does the boat insurance cover?

What does boat insurance cover?

Boat insurance covers damage to the insured boat in the event of collision and sinking, but also damage/injury that the boat causes to other boats, people or things. You can choose between Limited comprehensive, Comprehensive and Fully comprehensive. All coverages include Liability insurance for boats.

For full details of what the insurance covers, and the restrictions that apply, please see the insurance certificate and terms and conditions.

What are my obligations?

The insurance certificate specifies which information is used as a basis. If anything is incorrect, you must inform us immediately. Security regulations are damage prevention and damage limitation measures you must take, and you will find these in the insurance certificate.

In the event of damage you must contact us as soon as possible. If you do not comply with your obligations, the settlement payment may be reduced, fully or partly.

When does the insurance start and end?

The insurance is valid from the date you choose, but no earlier than the date on which you buy it. Remember to take into account any notice periods if you move your policy from one insurance company to another. The policy is valid for one year, and automatically renews every year. It can be terminated before its renewal date, when it is no longer required or at any time with 30 days’ notice from the date we are informed of the termination.

Where is the insurance valid?

Europe up to 200 nautical miles from the mainland – including crossings to Iceland, Svalbard, the UK, the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. Legal assistance and rescue insurance applies in the Nordic countries.

What does the insurance not cover?
  • Damage which is caused intentionally
  • Driving while intoxicated
  • Damage while participating in training for speed races/speed tests
  • Damage caused during commercial use
  • Damage covered by a guarantee or other agreement
  • Damage caused by rainfall, frost, ice blasting or contact with ice

At sea, comprehensive insurance is especially important.

Comprehensive insurance is recommended for boats

Different rules apply at sea to on land when it comes to insurance liability. That is, when you drive a car you have a statutory liability for damage you cause others. In other words, if a car damages something or injures someone, the car is the cause of the damage or injury and the driver or owner is liable.

It works differently with boats. The one who caused damage to a boat is only liable if they have been negligent or are directly responsible for the damage.

If your boat is damaged, you therefore run a greater risk of having to pay for your own repairs, even if it’s not your fault. This means that it is especially important to have comprehensive cover at sea. This way you are insured against the many different situations that you would otherwise have risked paying for yourself.

Examples may include if your boat is damaged by another boat that capsizes in bad weather when laid-up. Or if someone collides with you due to a technical fault on their boat.
