Which vehicles can be insured with classic car insurance?

Vehicles that are not used for daily use, but for leisure driving and that are more than 30 years old, can be insured with classic vehicle insurance. Both cars and motorcycles can be insured with classic vehicle insurance.

You can drive a classic vehicle up to 6 000 kilometres a year. If you drive more than this, it’s no longer considered leisure driving, and you need to have a regular car insurance instead.

Repurchase value - select the sum insured yourself

When you buy classic vehicle insurance, you can decide the sum insured yourself. This means that you can state how much it will cost to replace the vehicle you want to insure, so that you can buy it again if it should be necessary.

What does classic vehicle insurance cover?

You can choose between different policies for your classic vehicle: storage insurance, liability, limited comprehensive and comprehensive vehicles.

Liability is the statutory insurance that all registered vehicles must have. It covers legal assistance and injury to people, and damage to others’ vehicles, buildings and objects.

If you select limited comprehensive insurance you will get several included coverages, such as roadside assistance, fire, theft, glass damage and permanently mounted additional equipment. Comprehensive also covers damage to your own vehicle when you drive off the road, overturns, collisions and vandalism.

Storage insurance for classic vehicles

If you temporarily deregister your vehicle with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, the insurance is automatically converted to storage insurance if you have a comprehensive insurance. This gives you a cheaper insurance policy that covers fire and theft. You can also purchase your own storage insurance for unregistered vehicles.

FAQ

What should I do if I drive more than 6 000 km a year?

If you drive more than 6 000 kilometres a year with a classic car or motorcycle, you need to buy normal car insurance or motorcycle insurance.

How can I temporarily deregister the classic vehicle?

You can deregister your vehicle with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. When you do, we receive notification so we can adjust your insurance policy and save you costs.

When you want to register your vehicle again, contact us and we’ll upgrade you back to the original insurance policy.

When is the vehicle a classic?

If the vehicle is 30 years old or older, it is considered a classic vehicle.

Can I insure an unregistered classic car?

Yes, you can buy storage insurance for cars, motorcycles or other classic vehicles. This will insure the vehicle against, for example, fire and theft when it is in storage.

What should I do if I need roadside assistance?

Roadside assistance is included if you have limited comprehensive or comprehensive cover for your classic vehicle.

You can call us if you have any minor or major problems on the road. For example, if you have a puncture, if you run out of fuel, have engine failure or drive off the road.

  4. What happens next?
