How much does a boat loan cost?

It is important to be aware of the costs of owning a boat, such as insurance, maintenance, mooring, winter storage and a number of other things to bear in mind.

The price of the boat loan itself depends on the price of the boat, the repayment period, the type of boat you’re going to buy and how much down payment you’ll need – you need at least a 20% down payment All you need to do is give us some information and we’ll help you with the calculation.

Is the boat over or below 7 metres?

How to apply for a boat loan and buy a boat

Fill out the loan application and tell us a little bit about the boat

  • Complete and send a loan application. At least 20% down payment is required.

We’ll get in touch with you to get more information about the boat. We need to assess the specific boat you want to finance. Therefore, it is not possible to apply for a general loan confirmation for a boat.

Upload a purchase contract in the online bank

  • Upload a purchase contract in the online bank under “details” in the loan application you will find in “my loans and credit cards”.

The purchase contract must contain the boat’s engine and hull number.

Receive and fill out loan documents

  • For loans for boats below 7 metres, it is a prerequisite for the loan that the loan documents be signed before takeover and re-registration of the boat.

Loan documents can be sent to you by post or email. You can agree this with us by calling 24 06 20 25.

The documents must be returned by post to:
DNB Bank ASA, ITOP Depot Finans, PO Box 1600 Sentrum, 0021 Oslo.

Insure the boat

  • The boat must be covered by comprehensive insurance throughout the term of the loan and be in order before takeover.

If you bring together your insurance and loans in DNB, you’ll get a good overview in the online bank.

Register your boat

A registered boat is an identifiable boat. When the loan documents are signed, you must register the boat in Småbåtregisteret (the Small Boat Register) or Skipsregisteret (the Ship Register).

  • Boat under 7 metres:
You register a boat under 7 metres in the Småbåtregisteret (the Small Boat Register) or Securmark. Only when the boat is registered with you as the owner in one of the registers can we pay out the loan to the seller.

    Boat over 7 metres:
You must register a boat over 7 metres in the Skipsregisteret (the Ship Register). When the deed for the boat is registered with you, we will send our mortgage for judicial registration. When our charge on the boat has been entered in Skipsregisteret (the Norwegian Ship Register), the loan can be paid out to the seller.
