What is BankID?

BankID is a personal, electronic proof of identity and signature for secure identification and signing online. BankID is used across the banks where you have customer relationships, and as a login option on most public websites.

You may be asked to re-identify yourself in the BankID app

From April 2026, Stø (formerly BankID BankAxept AS) will be responsible for issuing BankID in Norway.

This means that you may already receive a notification from Stø asking you to re-identify yourself in the BankID app.

From April 2026, Stø private limited company (AS) is responsible for BankID

Stø recommends the BankID app as the fastest and most secure method for using BankID. The app is fast and secure to use, and you can also activate an ID card for physical use to show ID at events and in shops.

In spring 2026, many users of the BankID app will be asked to confirm their identity directly in the app. The reason for the ID check is a requirement from the authorities to verify that you are the rightful holder of your BankID. You will receive a notification directly in the app if you are among those who must confirm your identity, and the ID check is carried out by scanning a valid passport or national ID card in the app.

Use of BankID

Identification occurs when you use BankID as proof of identity, for example when you log in to the online bank or on a website that uses BankID.

Signing is used when you use BankID as your personal signature, for example when you purchase goods and services online.

Your BankID is personal and must not be transferred or otherwise handed over to or used by anyone other than you, not even family members or others you trust.

Do you already have BankID?

You can change or order a new BankID password in the online bank or in the BankID app. You can do this under the tab Settings and BankID.
