What is BankID?

BankID is a personal and electronic proof of identity for secure identification and signing online. BankID can be used as a sign-in option on most public websites, online shopping and for signing electronic documents.

What you need to remember before activating the BankID app

You must have an active BankID agreement

You must have an active BankID agreement in order to activate and use the BankID app. You can check this by logging in to the online bank, go to Settings and Bank ID.

If you see “Information about your BankID”, this means you already have a BankID. However, if you see What is BankID?, this means that you do not have an active BankID agreement.

You’ll then get the chance to set up BankID by following the steps. If you prefer not to do it yourself, you can contact us by chat or phone on 915 04 800.

Do you remember your personal password?

To activate/use the BankID app, it is important that you remember your personal password.

This is the same password that you use with the code device and the login option BankID.

The password is a minimum of eight characters. This is a password you have created yourself.

If you have forgotten your password, you can create a new password by logging in to the online bank, click on Settings and Change personal passwordIf you prefer not to do it yourself, you can contact us by chat when logged in or phone on 915 04 800

How to use the BankID app

Log in with BankID
  1. Click Log in in the right corner and enter your national identity number.
  2. Select BankID.
  3. If you have not logged in with the BankID app before, you’ll need to click Select another BankID and then BankID app.
  4. The choice will be remembered for next time.
  5. Click on the notification that appears on your phone to open the app. If you don’t have notifications turned on, you’ll need to open the app yourself.
  6. Authorise the request in the app.
  7. Go to the log in window in the online bank and enter your personal password consisting of at least 8 characters.
  8. Click on the arrow to log in.

What should I do if the activation of the BankID app fails?

You can delete and reinstall the app

The outdated version of BankID app may be left on the phone. Therefore, delete the BankID app, reinstall it and activate the app again.

Use another activation method

It is possible to activate the BankID app in two different ways:

  1. BankID with code device
  2. Activation codes
If you get an error message

If you get a page inside the app that says: we need information from the old app, URL not found or 404 – The page you are looking for does not existthis means you also have an old version of the BankID app on your phone. 

Check the app library/search function on your phone and delete all BankID apps. When you have deleted all BankID apps on your phone, you can download the app again and start the activation.

Have you recently had a BankID agreement activated or received a new personal password?

If you have a new personal password today, or a recently created BankID agreement, we recommend you wait one day before trying to activate the BankID app again.

There may be challenges with the network and/or web browser
  • Change the default web browser on the phone. Recommended web browsers are Edge or Google Chrome.
  • Try activating using another network, for example, WiFi or mobile data.
  • Turn off the VPN and delete the browser history.
I cannot activate the BankID app with activation codes  

In order for you to be able to activate the BankID app with activation codes, there are some conditions that must be in place.

  • You must have the correct telephone number and email address registered with us
  • You must have approved or updated your contact information
  • You cannot have changed your contact information over the last 24 hours
  • You must remember your personal password

NB: If you are experiencing challenges with activating the BankID app with activation codes despite meeting the points above, use another activation method.

BankID app FAQs

Can I throw out the code device when I get BankID app?

No, don’t throw out the code device even though you can now use the BankID app. You can get by with the app on a daily basis, but it’s still a good idea to keep the code device as a back-up. You may need the code device if you need to activate the Bank ID app again or if you lose your mobile phone for example.

How do I move the BankID app to a new phone?

To activate the BankID app on a new phone, you need to download it on the new device, then activate it again. We recommend you deleted the app from the old device before starting activation on a new phone.

My BankID is blocked because of the wrong password entered too many times, what should I do?

If you have your four-digit personal code and code device, you can log in to the online bank using the login method. Without BankID. Click on Settings, then Change personal password and click on New password and follow the steps.

Can I use the BankID app on multiple devices?

You can only have the BankID app activated on one device at a time. If you have a new phone, the app needs to be reactivated.

What should I do if the activation of the BankID app fails?

If you have BankID from another bank, this bank may not be offering the app yet.

How do I move my BankID app from another bank to DNB?

To move the BankID app from another bank, you must first delete the app on your phone. Then download it again and activate it with BankID from DNB when you are asked which bank you want to connect the app to. 

Note! If you experience persistent errors after having deleted the BankID app on your phone, it may still be connected to your BankID with the other bank. Therefore, contact the other bank so they can delete this in their systems as well.
