Children’s insurance

Insure your loved ones.

  • Financial security in the event of illness or accident

  • Select disability insurance as an add-on

  • Insures the child’s future income

Do I need children’s insurance?

In Norway we are looked after by a well-functioning healthcare system. Children’s insurance is not about the actual treatment of the illness or accident, but about the time that follows: The insurance makes it easier financially for the child and family if something should happen.

Ensures income, financial security and settlement payments

Children’s insurance gives financial security for both the family and the child if the child suffers an accident or becomes ill.

The insurance can be combined with disability coverage to secure the child’s income as an adult and avoid a life as a minimum pensioner on disability benefit. Settlement payments are also made for selected illnesses and in the event of accidental injury which results in permanent injury to the child.

Additional allowance on top of the assistance allowance from NAV (the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration)

  • In the event of long-term, private care and supervision, you or your child may have the right to an assistance allowance from NAV (the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration). This is when it is a result of permanent injury, illness or functional impairment.

Assistance allowance can provide supervision and care, as well as help with personal tasks.

With children’s insurance, you or your child get additional financial help when NAV has granted assistance allowance.

The size of the settlement payment from the insurance policy depends on which level of support is received from the government.

Permanent injury following an accident

  • An accident can result in the child being injured for the rest of their life.

Children’s insurance provides compensation for a permanent injury, the so-called degree of disability, and will compensate for lost quality of life as a result of functional impairment. The disbursement made will reflect how serious the injury is.

When the child turns 26, a separate accident insurance is set up for the insured party.

Unemployment benefit during hospitalisation

  • For hospital admissions of more than 14 consecutive days as a result of illness or injury, unemployment benefit is paid.

Disbursements begin from the first day in hospital, for up to one year.

Travel and treatment costs in the event of accident

  • Children’s insurance covers necessary expenses as a result of accidental injury, unless the costs are covered from elsewhere.

    Covered expenses can include

    • treatment costs given or prescribed by a doctor
    • treatment costs for dental damage
    • travel expenses

Settlement payments only apply for expenses that arise within 5 years after the accident occurred.

Aids and home adaptation

  • If the child gets an illness or sustains an injury that requires the home to be adapted or the use of technical aids, the children’s insurance can help solve this if the expenses are not covered elsewhere.

Adaptation of the home and grants for aids must be suitable for reducing the daily disadvantages the functional impairment causes, and must contribute to creating the most normal possible life for the child.

Death

  • Children’s insurance covers disbursements if the insured party dies and grants a payment exemption for the child’s insurance should the parent die, in accordance with the terms and conditions.

Disability insurance

  • The children’s insurance can be extended to cover incapacity for work.

If your child becomes incapacitated for work, their ability to earn money is reduced. Support from NAV (the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration) is lower than a normal wage. To cover some of the income gap if your child becomes incapacitated for work, you can buy disability insurance. This will provide the child with a better financial situation as an adult.

You can choose disability pension or single payment permanent disability benefit. The disability pension gives monthly payments (0.5; 0.8 or 1G) up to a given age, while a single payment permanent disability benefit gives a one-off payment of 8G.

AV1 school robot

  • Many children with long-term illnesses feel isolated and think it’s a shame to lose contact with school and friends. With children’s insurance, your child can spend time with their friends from their sick bed via an AV1 robot.

How does the AV1 robot work?

AV1 is a small, personal robot that comes included in the children’s insurance. The robot attends the classroom and takes part in social situations, so the child doesn’t miss anything.

It works like an avatar and is the child’s eyes, ears and voice via an app on a tablet or mobile phone. In this way, the child can attend the lesson and communicate with the class and their friends wherever they may be.

Questions and answers

How children’s insurance works

The insurance can be bought for children between 2 months and 16 years of age, and expires when they turn 26. You can choose which type of cover you want to have. If you have disability coverage, it will continue as adult insurance after turning 26.

The policyholder receives any settlement payments if the child is under 18. After the age of 18, the child receives the settlement payment directly.

Health declaration

When you buy children’s insurance, it is a legal requirement to provide health information. You can do this by filling out a health declaration for your child, which you will receive from us.

The insurance does not apply to illnesses or conditions that have shown symptoms before three months have passed since you accepted the insurance agreement (so-called grace period).

What happens when the child turns 26 and is too old to be covered by children’s insurance?

Information will be sent to your child stating that the insurance will expire when they turn 26, as well as information about the right to continue the personal cover. Your child must then get in touch within 6 months to inform us that they would like to continue being insured, so we can send a new insurance offer.

If your child has incapacity for work cover, this becomes adult insurance when they turn 26.

I have accident insurance for children. Is that enough?

Accident insurance with us gives a one-off payment if the child is declared medically disabled after an accident. It also covers treatment costs that may arise as a result of the accident. Children’s insurance is more comprehensive.

What is the basic amount (G)?

The basic amount, or “G” for the Norwegian term “Grunnbeløpet”, is the amount upon which all benefits in the National Insurance Scheme are based – i.e. that which constitutes Norway’s national insurance or social security system.

As of 1 May 2022, 1 G amounts to NOK 111,477.

The basic amount is also used to calculate disbursements related to private pension payments and insurance, such as children’s insurance, but also other personal insurance such as disability insurance, life insurance, critical illness insurance, treatment insurance and accident insurance.

Do I need to fill out a health declaration form?

When you buy children’s insurance, it is a legal requirement to provide health information. You do this by filling out a health declaration form for your child.

The insurance does not apply to illnesses or conditions that have shown symptoms before three months have passed since you accepted the insurance agreement (so-called grace period).

When can I buy children’s and youth insurance?

The insurance can be bought for children between 2 months and 16 years of age, and expires when they turn 26.

Who should fill out the health declaration form?

The policyholder must fill out and sign the health declaration, but children who have turned 16 must also sign the insurance.

When can the disability cover become due for disbursement?

Single payment permanent disability benefit cannot be paid before the child has turned 20 years old. The child must have been at least 50 per cent incapacitated for work for 2 consecutive years. Disability benefit cannot be paid before the child has turned 19 years old. The child must have been at least 50 per cent incapacitated for work for 12 consecutive months.

Is the child insured before I get a reply about the health declaration?

You are temporarily insured while we process your health information. This means that you are covered for unforeseen events that are unrelated to your health at the time you sign the agreement.

How much does children’s insurance cost?

The price of the children’s insurance varies depending on the cover you choose. You can calculate a price online before you buy insurance, or contact us for an offer.
