Contactless payment

Shopping
  • Pay by simply tapping the payment terminal with your card

  • On amounts below NOK 500, you don’t need to use your PIN

How to get started

To use contactless payment, you must have a card with the contactless payment symbol on it.

Contactless payment is ready to use as long as you’ve made a normal card purchase using a terminal.

How to make a contactless payment

  • Look for the contactless payment symbol on the payment terminal
  • Pay by holding the card close to the terminal
  • The payment is complete when you hear a beep
  • For amounts over NOK 500, you will be asked to enter a PIN

FAQ

Does the card have a PIN, chip and magnetic strip?

Yes, the card has a PIN, but this is not needed when making contactless payment for small amounts. When buying goods/services over NOK 500 in Norway, you will be asked to enter your PIN for contactless use.

The card also has a chip and magnetic stripes as normal, and also contains an antenna that makes contactless payments possible.

Can you use a contactless card for online shopping?

Yes, as normal. The card has the card number and CVV2/CVC2 code.

Are there any limits for contactless cards?

Each country has an agreed maximum amount per payment. The limit for individual purchases in Norway is NOK 500 and the maximum accumulated amount is NOK 700. Abroad, there are limits (for example, £25 in the UK.)

How much does a contactless card cost?

There is no special price, either to get one or to use one.

Contactless payment with a mobile or smartwatch

Contactless card payments have become the dominant payment method for Norwegian consumers in physical stores, and we understand that some people also want to use contactless payment on their mobile.

Today, we offer Google Pay for this, as well as Garmin Pay for payments with smartwatches.

We work with the technical integration and aim to make Apple Pay available to our customers by the end of the year. The solution will be available to all of the bank’s customers, including Sbanken concept customers.

How do I activate the contactless function?

In Norway:
The card is activated when it is used for the first time in a chip and pin terminal. Hold the card up to the terminal – you’ll then be asked to insert it and enter your PIN. The card will then be ready for contactless payment.

Abroad:
Contactless functionality is activated by inserting the card into the terminal and entering your PIN (when making a normal payment). - The first use of chip and PIN activates contactless functionality, even if you do not use the contactless part of the terminal

Do I risk paying for another customer’s products?

Do I risk paying for another customer’s products if I’m too close to a terminal?

No, in that case you would need to hold the card against the terminal that the other customer was going to use. You also have to hold the card 4 cm or closer to the terminal in order for the transaction to go through.

The security of the payment itself is just as good. The customer is also subject to very good consumer protection for contactless payments.

For extra security, you will sometimes be asked to insert the card in the payment terminal and enter the PIN.

Will the contactless card replace my current debit card?

Yes, most card products will be upgraded with this functionality. The new contactless card will normally be sent to you when the existing card expires.

Is it for online or offline transactions?

It can be for both, and may vary from country to country. In Norway, it will probably mostly be offline transactions on small amounts under Visa contactless, while BankAxept contactless takes place online.
