What does horse insurance cover?

What does the insurance cover?
  • Veterinary expenses
  • Prescription medicines
  • Illness equipment
  • Physiotherapy and chiropractic performed by a veterinarian
  • Settlement payment in the event of death/being put down
  • Foal belonging to insured mare, up to and including the day it turns 30 days old. The insurance provides cover up to two foals in a mare’s useful life.
  • Veterinarian appointment online via FirstVet
Are there any limitations to the cover?
  • The insurance cannot be taken out until the horse is 9 days old
  • The overall settlement payment is limited to the insurance sum stated in the insurance certificate, and applies per insurance year or insurance event
  • The insurance must be taken out in addition to other policies
What are my obligations?

You are obliged to report the horse’s actual health condition, and any diseases/injuries the horse has when the insurance is taken out.

The insurance certificate specifies which information is used as a basis. If anything is incorrect, you must inform us immediately. Security regulations are damage prevention and damage limitation measures you must take, and you will find these in the insurance certificate.

In the event of injury you must contact us as soon as possible. If you do not comply with your obligations, the settlement payment may be reduced, fully or partly.

  • Injury that occurs within the quarantine period of 20 days after taking out the insurance
  • Preventative treatment
  • Chronic disease or condition
  • Allergies
  • Cremation expenses
  • Congenital malformations and hereditary diseases
  • Trotting and galloping horses that actively take part in organised races

  • In the Nordic countries
  • In Europe during a stay of up to 12 months

Key things to know about horse insurance

  • The insurance can be bought for horses aged between 9 days and 15 years old.
  • From 15 years until 17 years of age, the horse can only be insured by moving a current insurance policy from another company.
  • The insurance will expire at the first main maturity in the year the horse turns 22 years old.
  • We recommend ID-tagging all horses for easier identification.
  • To buy horse insurance you must have at least one of the following policies with us: vehicle insurance, home insurance or contents insurance. Remember that you can get a discount by bundling your policies at DNB.
